Obstacle Course Racing, or OCR, is one of the latest high energy, high risk-high reward sports that I am engaged in. I am always looking for the next challenge, and right now, OCRs are fitting this bill. For those that do not know what I am talking about, Obstacle Course Racing is where folks run a set distance anywhere from 3 miles to 30 miles (Ultra Beast Spartan Race) and have obstacles thrown in the mix. Anywhere from 15 – 50, which could be rope climbs, barb-wire crawls, mud pits, memory problems to solve, logs to carry, buckets to fill with rocks and carry, and more mud pits. These races also add elevation to the race course, where most 5/10/20K races are “flat” with maybe a few hundred feet of elevation change, OCRs pride themselves on vertical. Thousands of feet of it.
Why? Why would you want to do that?
Heh.. I get asked that a lot. I only have a very basic answer. Because it is hard.
If it was easy, it wouldn’t be worth doing. I want to be challenged, I need to be challenged, and right now, OCRs are fitting this need.
Don’t worry, I will be talking a lot more about OCRs, with race recaps from last year as well as this year of racing, how I got started, what to do if you want to get started, how to train, eating and exercise tips.. (All from a previously morbidly obese 40 some odd year old guy).
More to come soon.
