Trail run workout: San Tan Valley Regional Park

Training continues for the Las Vegas Spartan Super obstacle race which is actually in Jean, NV.  Last year this was my first Spartan Super, and I was lucky enough to run it with @Brandon Weiss, a local cross fitter, Spartan, super smart engineer, and all around good guy.  That race was an eye opener for me as far as running that distance and the need for nutrition.  By mile 5 I was hurting and by mile 6, cramping with every stride.  Brandon stuck by me and got me to the end.  My payment to him- another free beer.  AROO brother!

Knowing that I did not want to repeat that performance this year  and I was the one leading a bunch of new members of the BaackPaack to run their first Spartan Super, several of us have been hitting the trails hard to get used to the distance, build leg stamina and cardio capacity.  This park – awesome resource.  Wide trails and plenty of them.  You get both solitude on the out loops and more personal interaction along the major trail junctions.  @Becca Dorsett’s route today had us going up and down the GM trail (Gold Mine) trail twice, which was a great way to start and end this workout.  Bike traffic was low compared to last weekend, and zero horses- but plenty of deposits on the trail.  watch yer feet!   8.5 miles 1:56 .  New PR by over 8 minutes.  Walked about a mile total when my HR was up over 164, and I wanted to bring it back down to fat burning HR zone.  I didn’t spend much time there on this run, as I was moving And grooving, shooting for a sub 2 hour finish.   Happy with the results.  Now I stretch, and wait for the rest of the ‘Paack.

– Working on being a better me.
